artificial intelligence for radar processing to detect weak targets

Description

I undertook this project during my intership at DSO National Laboratories.  In this project I was tasked with exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence(AI) methods such as Convolution Neural Networks and Transfer Learning. So as to improve the performance of radar systems.

Radar stands for RAdio Detection and Ranging. Radars operate through the emission of radio waves from a transmitter and the collection of reflected radio waves from a target. Information about the target, such as it's range, velocity, azimuth and elevation can be obtained through radar signal processing.

However, if a target is surrounded by strong clutter, there will be difficulty in detection of the target due to masking by the clutter. Clutter may arise due to natural foliage from the terrain. Or from man-made objects such as buildings and vehicles in an urban environment

Therefore, the use of artificial intelligence was examined to improve detection of weak targets. And it's performance compared against that of more conventional detection methods.
